Hey Dreamer,
When making an important decision, do you lean into fear or faith?
Last month while I was writing the March newsletter, I had an epiphany. I had just finished speaking with someone so immersed in her fear, that she preferred staying in a situation she described as exhausting instead of exploring her options.
I took time to reflect on this because it was not the first time someone let their fear be more important than their desires.
I believe, as a society fear is the main motivator for our biggest life decisions whether it’s the job/ career we choose, deciding between buying or renting a home, deciding when to have children, and whether or not we live out our dreams.
I wondered, why do we do that, why do we let fear guide the decision-making process?
And the answer came to me: as a society we lack FAITH.
We’ve allowed our fear to become our faith.
We make the fear of what could be, the worst-case scenario, more real than the faith in what could be, the best-case scenario. The concepts are the same but one leaves us feeling anxious and the other leaves us feeling hopeful.
One makes us believe the world is limited to what we know and fear, and the other makes us believe the possibilities are unlimited and supportive.
Here’s a visual representation:
Imagine you’re in a box. Your current reality is your matrix/box. You don’t know something beyond these four walls exists so your box is your only reality. There’s also a door in your box. But you’ve bought into the belief that opening the door will lead to imminent danger (ex. death of some sort, in our society, it would probably mean financial ruin).
We’re not even talking about stepping through the door yet. At this point, you might just be afraid to open it. To explore the possibilities. To discover something beyond your current reality. To finally get career clarity.
This is fear.
So you stay in the box thinking about the possibilities within the box, constantly hitting a wall, and seeing no viable solution to create change in your life/career.
You hope something will change without having to open the door i.e., without taking any action that would bring you outside your comfort zone into the unknown.
You play it safe choosing options within your box, limited options.
This is the life we live when we’re paralyzed by fear.
We don’t open any doors and hope we’ll experience something different.
However, when you understand you’re stuck in the box of your mind, opening the door is just opening the door of possibilities and exploration.
Nothing has to change.
Opening the door is being open to the possibility of discovering something new.
It allows you to see what’s out there without making any drastic changes. You can take a peak, discover what’s out there and then decide what you want to do with this new information.
But know that once you open the door and step outside the box there’s no turning back.
You can close the door, but you’ll still know what’s beyond the door.
So, you can ignore what you’ve discovered or decide to explore it a little more.
Beyond the door, you might discover a world where you make empowered decisions, where you have agency over what happens in your life, and where listening to your heart offers you options your logical mind could never offer you no matter how hard you try to find answers by thinking about it.
If you understand your current life is like a box. You’ll understand that deciding to open the door is the next logical step if you want to experience something new to help you create the change you’re looking for in your career.
