I’m Priscilla Jabouin, a Holistic Career and Mental Health Counsellor.
I help creative women who feel unhappy at work discover their dream career.
In 2009, I was in what I would describe as “career hell”.
I was an elementary school teacher who would have that pit feeling in my stomach on Sunday evenings and get out of bed on Monday mornings dreading the week ahead.
It was rough.
I know what it’s like to feel like there’s something wrong with you.
Like you’ve done everything you were told to do in order to be successful, you thought if you did the work, got the job, house, promotions, car, checked all the boxes required to be seen as an accomplished professional, you’d be happy, right?
“I mean, I should be grateful, right?”
But…I wasn’t happy.
I was miserable, confused,
stressed out, and drained at the end of each day.
I FELT STUCK because I had no idea what I would do next if I decided to leave my career as a school teacher.
I know how challenging it can be to choose yourself. To make your dreams and your well-being a priority when you don’t know how you’ll pay the bills if you decide to quit your job.
But the body never lies and my unhappiness led to high levels of stress that started to affect my health.
One day, as I stood in front of a group of rowdy students, I realized I had a serious decision to make. I could either stay in this career and accept that I would be miserable until retirement, or I could drop everything and face my fears to pursue what my heart truly desired.
I couldn’t imagine myself spending an extra year standing in front of a classroom full of kids, so I took a risk. I announced to my principal that I would resign by the end of the school year, and decided to pursue my first love, Psychology.
The next year, I was back in school to pursue a Masters of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology at McGill University – I never looked back!
