Do you often find yourself making a decision before giving yourself the time to reflect so you can make the choice that’s right for you? Do you ever say yes to please when the real answer is no? Are you often complaining about the little annoyances that could have been avoided had you just listened to your inner voice?
If you’re a yes person, let me guess, it’s not because you’re irresistibly sweet, it’s due to the guilt that arises when you set boundaries. You feel your needs won’t be answered or you’ve decided that they’re not important enough for you to even request them. Or, maybe you feel you’re asking for too much.
Whatever the reason, it’s time to set boundaries.
It’s time to put yourself first and accept that you’re important, that you matter, and that your opinion and your needs matter as well!
Too often we fall prey to the misconception that we shouldn’t rock the boat. We should accept that shyt happens and things are just the way things should be. But these « shoulds », « musts », and « have-tos », are exactly the reason why you’re struggling to say no.
If you’ve always said yes, saying no and setting boundaries is challenging. It will initially feel uncomfortable and the guilt will gnaw at you… but it’s all temporary. After a couple of misplaced and at times maybe a little bit aggressive but consistent « no » – you’ll be smooth sailing. Saying no will come out naturally, no justifications required.
When you’re able to say no to others and yes to yourself, you’re honouring who you are and what you really want. This makes it much easier to make the « right » decision.
But self-care is so much more than just saying no and becoming a priority in your life. Self-care is also about learning to love and take care of yourself.
What does that mean?
When you prioritize self-care, you’re taking care of yourself. When you take care of yourself you’re setting boundaries; when you set boundaries, it means you listen to yourself and are aware of what you need to support your well-being. When you know what you need you start paying attention to the subtle messages you receive from your body. An ache here, or a gut feeling, a discomfort… These are all messages that require your attention. Ignoring them is ignoring someone who deserves your love and attention: you.
When you practice honouring yourself, you build a new habit and eventually, you can no longer ignore your inner voice; the one nagging at you to explore your dreams. The one telling you it’s possible.
When self-care becomes a priority – your dreams, your desires and your wishes come to the forefront. You can either ignore them, like that pain in your back or acknowledge them and start taking the relevant steps to help make them a reality.
Why does self-care deserve to be at the top of your to-do-list? Because your dreams deserve your attention today, not tomorrow.
